Transcript: When Politics Invades the Game

Good evening. Welcome to The Public Perspective. I'm Jim Perrin, your host, and I hope you had a really good Fourth of July. Hope you spent it with family and friends and drank a little beer, ate some good food, celebrated our 250th anniversary of the greatest nation on earth.

I hope you had a good time and saw fireworks later on at night and just really enjoyed the last weekend. Because I know I did.

There's a lot of things to talk about right now going on in the world, a lot of different topics tonight. Although I want to talk about politics, but particularly politics in sports.

SPEAKER B[0:39]

Politics in sports has been there all the time, okay?

SPEAKER A[0:42]

Now, just a few days ago, the U.S.

SPEAKER B[0:45]

soccer team got knocked out of the World Cup championship round.

SPEAKER A[0:51]

And the Democrats seem to take a lot of pride and joy in that. They weren't rooting for the United States, which is bizarre to me, but I think it's because their hatred for Donald Trump and the hatred for the company, the country. And now I don't feel bad for the soccer team. I actually feel bad for Democrats.

SPEAKER B[1:13]

What a pathetic life you live if you wake up with every morning and with such hatred. It's incredible the hatred that they must endure and go through every day of their lives. It's unbelievable. But politics has always been in sports.

SPEAKER A[1:30]

Take for example the NFL. It's sportswriters who decide who goes into the Hall of Fame and who doesn't.

SPEAKER B[1:39]

They vote and they decide.

SPEAKER A[1:42]

Now this year's inductees over in Canton, not too far from where I live, by the way, they should include a guy named Bill Belichick, okay?

SPEAKER B[1:51]

But he's not on the list.

SPEAKER A[1:53]

He didn't make it.

SPEAKER B[1:54]

Why?

SPEAKER A[1:56]

Because he's friends with Donald Trump, so he had to be punished. But he happens to be second on the all-time, all-time wins list for head coaches.

SPEAKER B[2:06]

333 wins is as a head coach.

SPEAKER A[2:09]

Okay, several Super Bowl championships, and it goes on and on.

SPEAKER B[2:15]

Only Don Shula has more wins, 347, than Bill Belichick.

SPEAKER A[2:19]

He's a no-brainer Hall of Famer, first ballot. Now they, like I said, they had to punish him, so he'll get in.

SPEAKER B[2:28]

They can't keep him out with 333 wins.

SPEAKER A[2:31]

He'll get in.

SPEAKER B[2:31]

He'll get on the second ballot maybe next year or the year after, the third ballot, but They can't deny him that. Statistics say that he's in. So they just wanted to make him suffer a little bit because he was friends with Donald Trump. So anyway, and you can switch over now to baseball.

It's the same thing over there.

SPEAKER B[2:53]

The writers, the— they decide who goes into the Hall of Fame and who doesn't. And it's all political over there too with the Maybe it's the same sportswriters, I don't even know. But I do know that politics plays a big part in it, okay? I grew up in Minnesota and there's a guy named Burt Blyleven.

SPEAKER A[3:14]

He came in with the Minnesota Twins, he's a great pitcher, and ended up going over to Pittsburgh Pirates and won a World Series over there. Then he came back at the end of his career and he signed back up with the Minnesota Twins and he won another World Series with the Twins. So he won one in the National League, won one in the American League. Now when he quit, he was 5th on the all-time strikeout list. He still is to this day, 5th on the all-time. Only 4 pitchers in history have struck out more batters than Bert Blyleven.

SPEAKER B[3:51]

But they made him pay again because— why? Because he didn't like the press.

SPEAKER A[3:57]

He didn't talk to the press much. He didn't think much of them, so they didn't like him very much. No particular reason, they just didn't like him. So you're only eligible for 2 years.

SPEAKER B[4:08]

Went 11 years without being inducted to the Hall of Fame.

SPEAKER A[4:11]

On the 12th year, his last year of eligibility, they let him get in.

SPEAKER B[4:17]

Mighty good of them, huh? Yeah, no politics involved there.

SPEAKER A[4:22]

They let him in. He's the 5th on the all-time. Now, on that same list, there's another guy.

SPEAKER B[4:29]

He's 17th all-time strikeout leader.

SPEAKER A[4:33]

His name's Curt Schilling, okay? Played for Boston, played for Phillies. He, he's 17th on the list, okay? Now, he's a Republican. As a matter of fact, he worked for ESPN as a commentator and got fired from them. His crime?

SPEAKER B[4:49]

Being an outspoken conservative. Yeah, they didn't fire him, they let him go.

SPEAKER A[4:55]

Okay, he's 17th on the all-time list. The 16 people ahead of him are all in the Hall of Fame.

SPEAKER B[5:03]

Well, 2 are still, even though 100 different baseball players did steroids that same era, all those years. Okay, they excluded him because the hatred for him. And he's not getting in, and probably Curt Schilling will never get in either, all right? Because they're outspoken Republicans, and that's just the hard truth.

SPEAKER A[5:25]

If you don't toe the line, you will get canceled in professional sports.

SPEAKER B[5:30]

And sports shouldn't be about politics, it should be about sports.

SPEAKER A[5:34]

Should have nothing to do with politics.

SPEAKER B[5:36]

Politics should stay out of it, okay?

SPEAKER A[5:39]

But it's in every aspect of life.

SPEAKER B[5:41]

Take Hollywood, for example, okay? There's— it's really the Hollywood elite is run by Democrats, let's just face it.

SPEAKER A[5:52]

And there's a lot of Republicans, a lot of conservative actors and actresses over there, and they don't dare speak out because they'll get canceled. They won't get the roles, they won't get the calls, they won't get invited to the fancy cocktail parties. They won't get none of that unless they're— unless they've already established themselves as a big-time box office hit. Then they can't be canceled, then they can speak out. But the other ones are just stay in the closet, if you will.

SPEAKER B[6:22]

They're very quiet. They don't want to speak out because they want the good roles, they want to get to go to the parties, they want all the fame and acclamation that comes with with being a movie star.

SPEAKER A[6:33]

So they don't show their conservative values. Like I said, politics rears its head in every aspect of our lives.

SPEAKER B[6:42]

Okay, let's go back to sports for a minute.

SPEAKER A[6:46]

Caitlin Clark—

SPEAKER B[6:47]

I don't know if you know who she is, but if you don't know the name, Caitlin Clark is a basketball player for the Indiana Fever.

SPEAKER A[6:54]

She's in her second year, and she Set all the records.

SPEAKER B[6:59]

She's in the WNBA now, but she set all the records in college.

SPEAKER A[7:03]

She's the number one all-time scorer in college history.

SPEAKER B[7:06]

That includes males or females, okay? She's the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history, all right?

SPEAKER A[7:14]

Now she got into the league and they don't like her.

SPEAKER B[7:17]

Now she is a Trump supporter.

SPEAKER A[7:19]

She's made it clear she, she likes Donald Trump, okay? Okay, so they hate her for that, but it goes deeper than that.

SPEAKER B[7:26]

It goes into race, it goes into gender, it goes into race because they don't like her because she's white.

SPEAKER A[7:34]

She's just too good.

SPEAKER B[7:35]

She's so good that she's not supposed to be that good because she's white.

SPEAKER A[7:40]

It's reserved for Black players only to be that good in basketball.

SPEAKER B[7:45]

Even Oprah Winfrey, of all people, spoke out against her and said she gets so much attention, it's not because of how good she is, it's because she's white.

SPEAKER A[7:54]

Racist is that, dopra? Okay, I remember another guy, a black guy named Michael Jordan.

SPEAKER B[8:02]

Nobody ever said, oh, he's— he gets all this attention because not just because he's good, but because he's black.

SPEAKER A[8:09]

No, no one ever said that. That would be a racist thing to say.

SPEAKER B[8:14]

So why is it any different when Oprah Winfrey spouts off her big mouth and talking about a young girl who's just trying to go ahead and be the best she can be.

SPEAKER A[8:25]

She can't help it.

SPEAKER B[8:26]

She's white anymore than anybody Oprah can help. She's black. So I don't want to hear about that baloney race crap.

SPEAKER A[8:34]

But that's the race baiters.

SPEAKER B[8:36]

It's in politics and it's spilled over into sports. It's spilled over into Hollywood. It's spilled over into every aspect of our life— gender, religion, everything. Okay, as far as the gender goes, there's two genders.

SPEAKER A[8:52]

That's a fact. That's a biological fact. There's male and female. You're either a boy or a girl.

SPEAKER B[8:57]

Okay, now you're entitled to your own opinion, but you're not entitled to your own facts. If you think there's six genders, that's your business. Okay, but no doctor ever delivered a baby, or nurse delivered a baby and said, oh, on the birth certificate, this is a non-binary transvestite.

SPEAKER A[9:18]

That never went on there. It's either male or female.

SPEAKER B[9:21]

That's what goes on the birth certificate. And anybody who else who thinks different is just a pompous moron who has an agenda, or just as dumber than a box of rocks.

SPEAKER A[9:32]

And by the way, it's possible to be both. Okay, that's also a fact. You can be both a moron and an idiot.

SPEAKER B[9:41]

Yeah, you can be both.

SPEAKER A[9:43]

Okay, so anyway, it's like I said, it's, it's— you can have your own opinion, all right, but not your own facts.

SPEAKER B[9:53]

So I want to talk about religion a little bit because in the—

SPEAKER A[9:59]

in this country we enjoy so many freedoms.

SPEAKER B[10:02]

But if you take a Bible, for example, over to Iran, you get caught with a Bible, or even Saudi Arabia, who's friends of ours, but if you get caught over there with a Bible, you would be damn lucky if all you do is get thrown in prison. Okay, you will consider yourself lucky if you only go to prison. Okay, but yet in here in America, we can walk around with a Quran and now it's not a problem because this is a free country. See, the young people today think that this country is terrible and bad because professors and politicians and media has told them all this crap about racism and blah blah blah blah.

SPEAKER A[10:45]

It's all a bunch of crap. The thing is, we have freedoms in this country that do not exist in the world. They only exist here in the United States.

SPEAKER B[10:56]

People don't—

SPEAKER A[10:57]

that, especially young people don't—

SPEAKER B[10:59]

and think, oh, it's like this all over the country, all over the world.

SPEAKER A[11:03]

No, not United States. We have more freedoms that we take for granted than other countries ever have.

SPEAKER B[11:10]

They don't have the freedoms that we have.

SPEAKER A[11:14]

Just try going over and living one of them.

SPEAKER B[11:16]

All these people, these Democrats, are yelling Oh, it was a terrible country. Go on, go, go live over in Iran.

SPEAKER A[11:24]

Go live over in Saudi Arabia where you get caught stealing, they chop your hand off. Okay, then I'll give them credit, crime is low. They don't have a lot of thieves over there, I'll guarantee you that.

SPEAKER B[11:36]

So that could be an answer, I don't know, but it doesn't sound like a very much of an American answer that where we enjoy the freedoms and whatnot.

SPEAKER A[11:47]

But I'm gonna go ahead and—

SPEAKER B[11:51]

we're up against a hard break, I'm just being told, so I'm gonna go ahead and take a couple minutes off and I'll be back.

I want to talk about the Democrat socialists.

SPEAKER B[12:00]

That's part 2 of tonight's perspective. Okay, so I'll see you in a couple.

I want to talk about Democratic socialists. They seem to have seized control of the Democrat Party.

SPEAKER B[12:12]

The Bernie Sanders, the AOCs, Elizabeth Warrens, Rashida Tlaibs, all the—

SPEAKER A[12:19]

Ilhan Omar. They seem to have taken over kind of the Democratic Party.

SPEAKER B[12:26]

Jeffries and Schumer, they're the leaders supposedly, but in name only. So now I don't know if Graham Plattner, but he's running for a Senate seat up in Maine. He just dropped out, supposedly. He hasn't made it official, but they have till Monday to replace him, and they have a couple weeks after he drops out to replace him, but Monday's the deadline for him to drop out.

SPEAKER A[12:51]

Now, he had— he has a Nazi tattoo, and I'm confused because for years the Democrats have been calling Donald Trump a Nazi, calling him Hitler and a Nazi, and here's an actual Senate candidate with a Nazi tattoo on his chest. And they're okay with that. He's a Democrat. He's a— it's okay.

SPEAKER B[13:10]

Now he's got several sexual accusations against him by women.

SPEAKER A[13:17]

He likes to pleasure himself in porta-potties. Some disgusting stuff. He's not a good guy.

SPEAKER B[13:22]

He's a thug is what he is.

SPEAKER A[13:24]

But the Democrats, they, ah, he's okay because he's polling good. Matter of fact, 72% of Maine voters in his primary voted for him. So he obviously has the look.

SPEAKER B[13:36]

But just recently, one more woman came out with rape allegations against him, and now, oh, he's got to go. All the people that were over to looking and everything, they all said, oh, this last one, that's the red line. It's not the red line. His polls were dropping.

SPEAKER A[13:57]

They realized he wasn't going to beat Susan Collins. And they want that seat. They don't care about the voters. They don't care about 72% of the people in Maine who voted for him. They could care less. No, they want that seat. They want the power. They care about the power, not the people. That's just the truth of it. So they got him out, and now they're going to replace him. Again, not the voters, not up to the voters. It's up to the Democrat Party to throw a guy in there. They've done this before. Bernie Sanders was all set. His campaign was all set to be the 2016 Democratic winner on the primary to face off against Donald Trump in 2016, but he was a socialist and they decided, yeah, wasn't ready for socialists yet. Apparently we are now, but we weren't back then. Okay, and so they pulled the plug and they tanked Bernie Sanders' whole campaign and they installed Hillary Clinton instead.

SPEAKER B[15:03]

She was even worse than he was, so that worked out pretty good for the Republicans.

SPEAKER A[15:08]

All right, and then they pulled the crap again. They, they overlooked Joe Biden and he was senile for the last couple years of his at least of his office as president, okay, when he won in 2020. And in 2024, they put him out there again to run, and they were fine.

SPEAKER B[15:30]

Oh, he's sharp as a tack. He's good. He's a great guy. Oh, he can't keep up with him.

SPEAKER A[15:36]

And then came the debate, and he couldn't even hardly remember his name.

SPEAKER B[15:42]

And Democrats saw that.

SPEAKER A[15:44]

But more importantly, they knew The American people saw it. So what'd they do? Oh, no primaries. They just replaced him. Joe, you're out. He didn't want to get out.

SPEAKER B[15:56]

No, you're out.

SPEAKER A[15:57]

The Bidens— Jill, Jill, even shame on her. And Hunter, shame on him. They didn't even want him to get out. They're sending out a guy who doesn't even know what he's doing out there. But he was just a puppet for the Democrats is what he was.

SPEAKER B[16:12]

During that time.

SPEAKER A[16:13]

Whether you believe it or not, that's again your opinion. But they replaced him with Kamala Harris, but they didn't let the voters decide. There was no primary. There was nothing. It was just, she's in, she's your guy, she's your, your nominee, and vote for her because she's, she's great. We got to beat Donald Trump. Worked out good because she was even more incompetent than Joe Biden. So it worked out good. And now they've done it with, again, with Graham Platner. They've taken away— they talk about democracy all the time.

SPEAKER B[16:51]

It's not democracy when you don't let the voters decide.

SPEAKER A[16:55]

Democracy is letting the voters decide. See, how it works is we the people vote for who we want to go to Washington to represent us. The people. That's how it works. That's democracy. That is a— the constitutional republic we live in. That's how the system works, and it's been working for 250 years. And socialists and communists, that's— they install people, they install dictators, they install— they don't vote, they install people and tell the people that's the way it is. That's socialism, which leads to communism, okay? That's not democracy.

SPEAKER B[17:37]

That's not democracy anyway.

SPEAKER A[17:39]

They always scream, 'Oh, Trump's going to destroy democracy.' What a joke. Give me a break. That's not democracy, okay?

SPEAKER B[17:48]

And for anybody, you're—

SPEAKER A[17:50]

again, you're a baboon fool if you think that's democracy, okay? And so my thing is the The midterms are coming up, and as Republicans and conservatives who care about this country, there's quite a few actually besides Plattner who dropped out, but there's quite a few Democratic socialists, okay?

SPEAKER B[18:13]

One out in Colorado, another up in Michigan, and a couple in New York under Madami, Mondami, or whatever the heck his communist name is. Most of them weren't even born in this country, okay? But they're—

SPEAKER A[18:30]

we were nice enough to let them in, and they take advantage of it by trashing America, running for Congress, Senate, mayors, running for public office and trashing the United States the whole time. Their goal is to take it down, okay? So it's important we get out there Even though Donald Trump's not on the ticket, it's important as conservatives and even liberals, moderate liberals who care about this country, and independents who care about this country, get out there in, in the midterms this coming up November and make sure you get out there and get the vote out and vote.

SPEAKER B[19:10]

Because if we let the—

SPEAKER A[19:12]

it's a true threat to the United States. And if we let these people take over, it's, it's not going to be good because they don't like this country. They didn't come here, they came here for an opportunity, they say, but they came here and now they want to change, fundamentally change the United States of America into something that looks like Russia or China or Venezuela.

SPEAKER B[19:35]

They want to take over and, and really dismantle American values that we all hold dear.

SPEAKER A[19:44]

That's why also Trump is pushing the Save America Act. What that all that says is that you have, you need to, you need to be a United States citizen and you need to show ID when you vote. Okay, you need ID when you go to the airport. They won't let you on a plane without an ID, you geek. They won't let you get married without an ID. You can't buy buy beer in, in some stores without an ID, even if you're 70 years old. They still make sure you give your ID. You can't have a driver's license. You can't— there's so many things. You can't get a fishing license without an ID. There's so many things you need an identification for to prove who you are and to prove your— and why should voting be any different? They say it's suppressing the vote. What are they really saying is that Black and brown people are too stupid. They're too stupid to get an ID. Now, to me, that's racist. There's a lot of Black and brown people who are probably thinking, oh, they won't—

the Republicans are trying to—

SPEAKER A[20:48]

no, Republicans don't care if what color you are, color your skin, where you came from, nothing. If you're a citizen of the United States, you should be allowed to vote in the United States. If you're not a citizen, you shouldn't be allowed to vote in our election. Period, end of story. And you should show an ID to show who you are, to prove who you are, that you can vote, so you don't go vote 20 times.

SPEAKER B[21:13]

Because that's also what the Democrats do.

SPEAKER A[21:15]

They like to harvest, ballot harvesting, and they like to vote several times with the same person because some of the states don't require ID. And all Donald Trump's trying to say is the Save America Act, which John Thune, the Senate Majority Leader, he's got to get his shit together because he can't seem to get the votes. Now they need 60 votes, but if they did away with the filibuster, because the filibuster says in the Senate— it's passed the House several times, but if it was in the Senate, it needs 60 votes to pass. They can only get 53 with one Democrat, John Fetterman from Pennsylvania.

SPEAKER B[21:54]

He He's been voting for, for, with the Republicans on this one, but there's even a couple Republicans voting against it. 3 of them are Trump haters and stuff, and so they're, they, they're on their way out and they got primaried by Trump. And so I understand their anger and their, their angst.

SPEAKER A[22:12]

I get that part. But John Thune needs to do away with the filibuster because the second the Democrats get into power in office and take control of the Senate, they're going to do away with the filibuster. The filibuster makes it 60 votes. They should do away with it. Then it's a simple 50, 50 votes is all they need.

SPEAKER B[22:34]

J.D. Vance, he'll break the tie.

SPEAKER A[22:37]

Okay, and we can get this thing across the finish line. But John Thune doesn't seem to be willing to do it.

SPEAKER B[22:42]

I, I don't know.

SPEAKER A[22:43]

I thought he was a, a big Trump loyalist and I I thought he was a, he loved the country and stuff. Apparently he doesn't. And so it's really important that we try to hang on to our republic and our democracy. And I just can't stress that enough.

SPEAKER B[23:02]

We need to, we need to get out there and this November and really push, push the vote and try to keep, keep the Senate. And keep the House, okay? Because it's important. Because the first thing they're going to do is they want to abolish the police, they want open borders, they want to take away your guns, okay?

SPEAKER A[23:25]

That's what communist countries do.

SPEAKER B[23:28]

That's why you can't fight back when they impose their power and their will on you, okay?

SPEAKER A[23:33]

They, they want to go ahead and abolish prisons. No prisons. What the heck do you think we're going to do if we have no police and all the rapists and murderers and bad people are out in the streets? You think they're going to give their guns up? No, they're not.

SPEAKER B[23:50]

Just law-abiding citizens.

SPEAKER A[23:51]

So that's what's on the ballot this— come this November.

SPEAKER B[23:56]

And you better take it serious because they are—

SPEAKER A[24:00]

they're taking it very serious. We can't go to sleep at the wheel here.
